In the annals of history, replete with enlightening tales and transformative ideologies, few figures stand as colossally as Siddhartha Gautama, better known as Buddha. The founder of Buddhism is not just a spiritual icon but a beacon of peace, whose life and teachings continue to inspire millions across the globe. The Final Chapter: Buddha’s Departure

The reality, backed by ancient texts and scholarly consensus, reveals a narrative as profound as Buddha’s life itself. While it is a popular belief that Buddha left this world in a state of meditation, historical scriptures provide a more detailed account.

Siddhartha Gautama’s journey on Earth concluded in the town of Kushinagar, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India, at the ripe age of 80. The canonical texts, particularly the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta (part of the Pali Canon), describe his last days and his journey towards Parinirvana – the final deathless state beyond rebirth. Before his passing, Buddha fell ill after dining at the home of a generous host named Cunda. The meal purportedly included a dish named “Sukara Maddava”, which is often depicted as the cause of his fatal ailment.

Despite his deteriorating health, Buddha continued to teach and impart wisdom to his followers. On his final bed of rest between two Sal trees, Buddha entered into a sequence of meditative absorptions, uplifting his mind to profound heights. His last words to his disciples were a testament to his teachings, “All conditioned things are impermanent. Strive on with diligence.”

It was after these profound final instructions, centered on the impermanence of life (Anicca in Pali), that Buddha passed away. He withstood the throes of mortal pain and embraced Parinirvana, not simply by meditating, but through a conscious act of will, accepting the natural end of his physical existence.
